Filippo Bonelli
PhD candidateFilippo is a PhD student with a background in ophthalmology and drug delivery. His collaborative project, situated between the MERLN Institute and the Ophthalmology department at MUMC+, aims to revolutionize the cultivation and expansion of primary corneal endothelial cells in vitro. Corneal endothelial failure stands as a primary cause of blindness, often necessitating corneal transplants. However, the current reliance on tissue from deceased donors, coupled with the one donor-one recipient paradigm, highlights the urgent need for innovative solutions. Approximately 13 million individuals worldwide are affected by the lengthy waiting list for corneal transplants. Filippo's PhD aims to improve the cultivation of corneal endothelial cells, with the goal of broadening the donor source to aid multiple recipients.
When he is not in the lab, Filippo finds joy in sports, particularly volleyball and climbing. He is also an avid hiker, relishing moments spent walking alongside his faithful companion, Etna.
